13-language vocalist and classically-trained violinist Maki Mae headlined crossover performances at prestigious venues, sports arenas, and major televised events such as America's Got Talent and Special Olympics World Games. Her forthcoming six-album release features remarkable collaborations with iconic artists such as Robby Krieger of The Doors, Danny Seraphine (Chicago), Hiro Yamamoto of Soundgarden, Ed Roth (Annie Lennox), and John Paris of Earth, Wind & Fire.
Despite being born mostly deaf, Maki performed Beethoven's Piano Sonata Pathetique at the age of ten. At fourteen, she was a National Taiwan Violin Competition Finalist, and by fifteen, she performed the Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto for the First Lady of Taiwan. Her mother, a linguist, inspired Maki’s passion for languages. After winning the San Francisco Art Song Festival for her performances in Italian, German, and French, Maki graced the stage at the San Francisco Opera Center most notably as Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte). Renowned for her cuperto technique (soft high voice) and elegant style, Maki has performed for luminaries such as Queen Paola of Belgium, Dame Joan Sutherland, Jack Lemmon, and Clint Eastwood.
To engage new audiences, Maki ventured into electronic dance music with her operatic and violin interpretation of Skrillex's "Kyoto," which topped the Global EDM Charts for five weeks. She performed on hundreds of sets with producers such as Skrillex, Diplo, Autograf, and Elite Force. Maki was then cast in A Song for Manzanar, a short film selection at the Cannes Film Festival, and and became the first Asian to perform Christine (Phantom of the Opera) in England. In 2012, she was installed as a Voting Member of the Recording Academy and has actively participated in the Classical Music Committee, Blue Ribbon Selection Committee, and Advocacy Committee.
Maki graduated premed from the Johns Hopkins University, studied violin under Berl Senofsky at Peabody Conservatory, and trained with Sheri Greenawald at the San Francisco Opera and Yefim Maizel at the Metropolitan Opera.
